Looking Good! Is that the new Matlock rear grab bar made by PRM, looks like it's sticking out pretty far in the back but still looks good :yay:

very nice, how do you like your 23 inch fronts compared to the stocks? also nice handguards what set up is your hand guards, i like them because they attatch at end of bar instead of clamp around and that will crowd your controls when they clamp around.

EEHonda

I really like the 23" fronts compared to the stockers. I really like the guards also, I have run them for about a year with no issues. If you have stock bars, you do have to remove the weighted inserts.

Not wrong for what I got, but they are a little different than the ones on the bike on the Matlock Racing website. Look close at the pics on the website, believe me I did when I was putting them on. Just ended up putting them where they would fit and the names would be semi-horizontal.

You gotta watch those "quicksand" mudholes at little egypt, they look like a puddle but are DEEP. I ran over the very edge of one and half the quad fell in. I barely was able to lift the XX out of there LOL, had me worried. Nice place to woods ride though.

Yes, there are some nasty mud holes there. My favorite part about that place is the woods track at the end of the old highway.

Whats the deal with the 420 Hubs?? Just buy them and throw them on? Does Baxter know about this??? I am very interested to find out how much work they are to make them work, I thought I read that they needed some machine work.

Yes, but you have to make some spacers or use washers as the hub is about .4" narrower. No machine work for them. There is a thread on it. Search for "spline".

I haven't tried any 9" rims yet. They would have to have a real offset to clear the knuckles.

what did the 110mm bolt pattern accomplish? does it give you more wheel options?

Superswire
07-08-2010, 08:21 AM
Wheel options ? My god yeah, 110mm is like the standard for a few hundred atv/atcs out there...

check it out...everyone has at least one atv with 4/110 rears...

EEHonda
07-08-2010, 05:12 PM
What he said. Most sport bikes use 110mm pattern on the back. The 110mm pattern is only half the battle though. You aslo have to clear the IRS components and have an offset that works for the width you want to achieve. I actually have a set of 10" Douglas rims that won't clear, but my 10" ITPs will. You have to be careful of the inner rim dish. A deeper dish makes it easier to get the tires on the rim when mounting, but will hit the bottom knuckle on the 700xx. I am still looking for some cheap 10" rims locally that have very little dish to throw some 20" tires on.

So it is only a benefit if you have 110mm rims already or can get some that will work cheap.

Desert II went on this morning. My Baja was cracked worse than I thought, and the upper left frame mount needed a little welding. Hopefully the rubber mounts will keep this problem at bay, whether it be vibration or flex. Looks like there is enough room to add a small storage box for long rides as well.

Yes, you have to put spacers on the outboard side though. I just ran them for a bit, because all the 4-110 rims I had were on a SRA offset and it made it really W I D E.

This is what I tried to mount 9" rear rims.

This is a modified 450r rear hub vs the stock XX hub
3259

This is the clearance you get with a 450r stock 9" rear rim mounted with the modified 450r hub.

This setup will make the rear about 53" wide.

I also have a set of 26" Mudlites for winter, and run 25" Bighorns the rest of the year. I'd have to leave the 13t on it for those though, but the stockers are light as hell. I put them on my old Z400 ( I had extended hubs so it was about stock width), and I couldn't get it to rev out. I didnt have a gps then so I dont't know what it topped out at.

I don't think they make Baja's on 144mm for the rear. I have tried switching tires like that before on my 400EX's and couldn't tell much difference, I will have to try these and see.

I still do this when i am rushing for a race but I also find that putting the fronts the wrong way , are self cleaning when the thick stuff starts to stick and they help out braking in the same thick stuff.

Glad he finally squared up with you EE, so you have stage 1 all around now right? Im sure you like the setup over stock so I wont even ask that question. But how much of a difference is it?

I really haven't had a chance to beat them to death, but my initial impressions are good. They do not pogo like the stock ones. I am not sure if the smaller guys have as much of a problem with that, but I sure did. A couple decent doot-di-do's of any kind and the stockers were trying to throw me in the air.

They should get a good workout next month in WV though.

Stage 1 Elkas w/rebound did really well on our Hatfield McCoy trip. It wasn't very hot out, but I never noticed them fading even a little. Not once did the bike try to buck me off forwards like the POS stock rears did. Real happy with them.

20/21 GBC X-Rex f/r tires were awesome. With these tires and Eds arms on the 2nd notch, it always went where I pointed. The bike never did anything goofy, responded as I intended every time. That impressed the crap out of me!

Plenty of fuel with the new IMS tank, liking the natural color. The black fenders need to be the same color as my tank now.

EEHonda,
Looks great! I especially like the heat shield. How effective is it? Additionally that steering stabilizer caught my attention. I’d like to know more about it. Its cost, installation (easy or hard), and most especially how effective it is and the manufacturer? My machine front likes to dart slightly from side to side when riding it fast. Right now I am working on the Elka Shocks to try to correct that but in the event that doesn’t work I am looking for a Plan B.
Thanks in advance,
Sid

I think you are talking about the heat shield that I made for the Gen 1 Barker head pipe. It worked really well, much better than the Barker shield. I run the Gen 2 head pipe now and the Barker shield that came with it works great.

I run a Streamline stabilizer now, they don't make one for a 700XX so you have to adapt it. It wouldn't work at all if I didn't have my front shroud trimmed. I was running a stabilizer off of a VW super beetle, it worked well and was cheap but not adjustable. I switched bumpers and the XX didn't really have a good place to mount it. Making your own stabilizer or adapting one off another bike takes patience and some trial and error.

EEHonda,
Thanks for the advice. I would like to get a real nice looking heat shield like you have that would be 100% compatible with the bolt hole pattern on the machine and the ability to keep my right leg from getting toasted. In addition some company is missing the boat by not designing and manufacturing a steering stabilizer for the XX. What are your thoughts about the stability of the machine with a stabilizer on it? How has it improved yours?

I agree. It is pretty easy to make a shield. Just start with an old aluminum silencer canister and cut it out however you like. Stabilizers are well worth the money IMO. Makes a big difference in rocks and ruts.
