: What shoes do you ride in?
5W0P3 12-15-2008, 01:55 PM What shoes do you ride in? I know its pretty easy to catch a root or slip off the peg, but do you ride in riding boots or what?
Me personally for now - tennis shoes :D Been thinking about riding boots, but I want to be able to move my ankle shift - not my whole leg to shift.
scuzz 12-15-2008, 02:04 PM I use some old Adidas Football 3/4 cleats. I've been using them for about 3 years now and they have held up very well especially compared to my buddies who wear tennis shoes.
I want to riding boots but would be (like you) afraid of it interfering with my shifting.
smo0oth1 12-15-2008, 02:10 PM My neighbor actually gave me a pair of boots that were practically new. What sucks is that the toe area is to blunt and don't have sufficient room to get under the shifter with your heel on the pegs. All my dirt bike buddies swear on wearing them to keep from getting hurt like in my picture post but its almost impossible. I've been sporting my old nike's lol
5W0P3 12-15-2008, 02:25 PM I think i'll stick to the tennis shoes :D My buddy with the YFZ450 bought some Alpinestars.. he was wearing his doc martins by the end of the day ;)
Admin 12-15-2008, 02:30 PM You'll regret wearing "tennis" shoes (we call them sneakers :) ) once you miss the peg and run over your foot. That's worse than riding without goggles. I've seen some nasty accidents like that. Compound fractures, broken ankles, broken feet, etc.
Riding boots are worth every penny they cost. Invest in some good ones. They're only stiff for a while until they're broken in. I can't imagine riding in anything less.
smo0oth1 12-15-2008, 02:31 PM I am looking to get some lace up steel toes or something though, Some good thick leather around the foot and ankles isn't a bad idea

One of the guys on the dirtbikes that rode with us this weekend just bought some new Gaerne boots. He said his alpinestars wore out before the broke in. They look really uncomfortable.

I agree. I'll probably be looking for something snake proof as well.
Dave01 12-15-2008, 02:34 PM Alpinestar Tech 3 boots for me. Just adjust the shift lever for more room, break the boots in real good and you will have great protection when riding. I rolled mine over on myself and the rear tire pinned my foot down. No damage to me or the quad, but without good boots, i'm pretty sure I would have at least fractured my ankle
Admin 12-15-2008, 02:38 PM oops... 5WOP3....i messed up your post...went to quote you, and hit the "edit" button by mistake. Sorry bout that!

scuzz 12-15-2008, 02:41 PM Yeah they had a post on another site where some guy was talking about nerf bars and how great they were because...get this...when he was wearing shorts his leg went under the wheel and rashed-it pretty bad.
Um...who rides with short on anyways?
Admin 12-15-2008, 02:45 PM You'd be surprised how many morons are out there that ride in shorts and no helmet.
And don't think that heel guards or even nerf bars will save your leg from getting sucked under the tire...I've still seen it happen even with those. But yes it does reduce the risk greatly.

My YFZ buddy has the Tech 3's also. I see the benefits, I just dont know if I ride hard enough or in enough tight spots that would cause the quad to do something like that that I would REALLY benefit from having them.
Nerf bars save feet.

Yea, i'll never ride with shorts on. If you have nerf bars, how does your leg get under the rear tire? Between the fender and the peg? OUCH!
scuzz 12-15-2008, 02:51 PM <---- has went riding without a helmet.
<----- organ donor.
<----- lol

lol... I dont think i could ride with out a helmet and goggles ever again. I love not having grass, dirt, rocks, in my eyes and mouth.
Admin 12-15-2008, 02:52 PM Yep, gets in behind the peg, or goes off the side (past the protection of the nerf bar) and then behind and under (usually from landing weird off a jump).
scuzz 12-15-2008, 02:53 PM Yeah, I used to. Now I don't.
Scouts honor.

Maybe i'm just a fatass, but my feet don't come off the pegs very much :lmao:.
I'm also not going for record height.

scuzz 12-15-2008, 02:58 PM That was it!

Agreed. Well Minus the boots for now, I just need more flexibility.
scuzz 12-15-2008, 04:06 PM My riding pants = cheapo wal-mart jeans. I'm on my second pair after wearing out the rear end of my other ones.

Thor makes a really nice pair of pants that are over the boot as well. And they're water resistant :D Also, unzip into shorts.
smo0oth1 12-15-2008, 04:19 PM I convinced my g/f to get me some pants shirt/jersey and helmet for Christmas. Just need to pawn off the boots I was given and find some with a slimmer toe.

xx-rated 12-15-2008, 05:43 PM I can't believe that you guys actually ride with tennis shoes on. I've had riding boots from day one. I don't have a problem shifting, either. At least wear a real good pair of work boots got god sakes! They protect your feet, ankles and lower legs from a LOT of hazards. I'd say next to a helmet, a pair of boots is next on the list of riding essentials.

I been sportin the MSR's also, this was bout two hours into my first ride on the 700, I thought a puddle I was coming up on was just a few inches.... Needless to say it wasn't, sunk the bike to the seat. I was sick with myself thinkin I done sucked up water but all was good. You can see where the water came up over me and was only about 50 degrees out that day... it was freakin cold riding in the woods wet!

5W0P3 12-15-2008, 05:46 PM I'm not scared of the mud, but mud + december = no bueno. Even in Texas. Summertime... i'll need a different set of tires.

I'm poe.
[sheepishly]
Football cleats are *kinda* protective of your ankle though.
smo0oth1 12-15-2008, 08:09 PM You do wear the proper socks though... Don't You?

I like the duals on that quad!
KTM265 12-16-2008, 09:09 AM Thanks, that is my KFX700 in the back with Big Gun duals on it. I recently removed them and went back to a 2 into 1 modified stock exhaust. The Big Guns seemed to rob me of lower end power. When I modified my motor with cams and piston kit, I went ahead and put the modified exhaust on. With a stock bore, teh 2 into 1 has proven to be the better set up and the modified stock performs as well as a Muzzy.
scuzz 12-16-2008, 09:41 AM You do wear the proper socks though... Don't You?
I wear socks, but I never thought of them as improper in any way.
smo0oth1 12-16-2008, 09:53 AM Ahh I was just clowning
scuzz 12-16-2008, 10:05 AM No worries!
:P
vfm2010 12-16-2008, 12:46 PM I have worn sneakers when just foolin around the yard, but I typically wear heavy work boots or my old combat boots. oh wait, socks too!
