This was found on another forum................... Thought it would be great to share if you have not seen it yet.

Heres a list of some comparable hp numbers.

08 250ex: 16.8hp
08 300ex: 22.1hp
08 400ex: 34.2hp
08 450r: 42.6hp
08 700XX: 53hp
08 KFX450r:42.1
08 KFX700:48.8
08 Z400: 36.6hp
08 Ltr450: 41.6hp
08 Raptor 250: 18.8
08 YFZ450: 38.6hp
08 Raptor700r: 46.9hp

Remarkably, it is making at least 10.4 more hp than any 450 and 7.1 more hp than than Raptor 700r while a modest 4.5hp more than the automatic KFX700 with the mighty V-Twin.

The numbers of from the California Environmental Protection Agency.

That web site is great. I think atv and motorcycle makers should have to publish their Hp and torque #'s on a "window sticker" just like the auto makers.

They all say things like class leading performance when advertising their quad or bike but very few will proudly spill the beans on actual power. Too often you have to play detective to find that out.

Of all the quads that you chose to list, you some how seem to have left out the only other IRS sport quad.
The 525 is rated for 49.6 hp. More hp than the Rap and the same weight. The 525 is more quad than I ever would have guessed. That first shoot out will be interesting to say the least.

The 46.9 is at the crank for the 700 Raptor too, they normally get 40 or so at the tires stock.

That sure is the important hp number. What is all that hp worth unless it makes it to the point of friction (tires to ground). I don't remember exactly but I remember hearing the 700xx is about 43 hp at the tires. Obviously, you can mod your quad to get more of the engine hp to the tires but for stock comparisons it is the hp at the tires that makes the difference. Also, the old weight/hp ratio. I've heard these results before but I've completely forgot these numbers. I believe at least between the rappy and honda they were very close and the outlaw most likely is a little higher. All sweet quads.

Bo, In your quest for more horsepower have you found any specific types or brands of lubricants for transmissions and/or chains that will deliver measurable results at the wheels? (in other words reducing parasitic power loss)

If we didn't have wet clutches or if we separate engine oil from tranny oil we could go synthetic. You can see a visible infrared temperature difference on a motorcycle engine with synthetic vs. regular oil.

Here's some interesting reading but wouldn't totally apply to our engines. (damn wet clutch)

The article says it can be used with wet clutch systems... I believe the Honda oil I purchased was synthetic also

im not 100% sure about synthetic oil in a wet clutch system either because when i had my ninja i asked about synthetic oil and they say not to use it in a wet clutch system untill you get a lot of time on the motor in this case 15k miles or more. if your really worried about engine oil than just change it more often, i doubt i will ever run synthetic oil in my machine.

Like everything you can get many grades and forms of synthetic oil. Most good syth oils are just fine for wet clutches - it will say "suitable for wet type clutchs" somewhere on the front.

If it doesn't say "suitable for wet type clutchs" then don't buy it.

Synthetic oils that are not suitable have an additive called XXXXX ......can't remember.......but is usually listed on the cover as "friction modifiers "........this is the stuff you want to avoid.

Edit: I can remember, "molly" additive.....it's actually got a realy long name but most refer to it as molly.

I use a "full synthetic" oil but most aren't; the companies can say it's synthetic even if it's a blend of the two.

I use Motul 300V Factory Line 15w/50.......expensive stuff. Engine runs better, cooler & longer.

Don't get stuck on dyno numbers....dyno's vary and so do the numbers..too many variables involved, best thing is to get a base number and stick with the same dyno so you know what you get from each mod.

Plus, those numbers are as sold numbers and in many cases the motors are all choked down. There is lots of FREE HP in all quads. Unfortunately, they also don't give HP compared to weight. A 45HP quad weighing in at 360lbs is going to have an advantage over a 50HP quad weighing in at over 500lbs. Trust me, I know. :D

I use Yamalube and chainwax. Never done any dyno testing on it though.

HP #'s from that list are crank hp, look at the dyno sheets we have posted. That is real HP but pay attention to the torque, that is the real tell all #. I am at 56 at the rear wheels as of today. The bike is headed back to EHS for some more work. Throttle body and some other stuff to try, we will keep you posted.

I've actually made 62hp with the 12:1 piston, This was on the 11:1 when I dropped some valves on the dyno. I originally was Dyno'ng at the Honda dealership, We had a fallout and I never got copies of them. In a few weeks I should be able to get back on the dyno and post.

The blue is running through the gears, The red is a fourth gear pull

By reading a lot of the other posts it looks as if you use a 13tooth. With all that HP do you just start out in second. We haven't done nearly what you have and we get 53+ and can't really use a 13tooth because it becomes useless at lower speeds.

smo0oth1
02-09-2010, 09:53 PM
No, I have never used a 13t, I put the big3 on the bike when I purchased it new and never needed to go that route. Yes... 1rst is still useless with the 14t

The only difference is +1mm Intake Valves and bored TB. Usually a TB is good for 1Hp and the valves is hard to say. This pull was done with the tune from the 12:1 setup as you can see the A/F got a bit wonky. We had pulled the 12:1 and installed the 11:1 to get some reference numbers on HP change. I didn't check clearance as I was limited on dyno time and dropped 3 valves on the next run when we were tuning it. So considering the circumstances, this combo had good results. Here in a few weeks I'll have another chart to show the 62 as I have some dyno time scheduled.
