: 20 Hour Service
5W0P3 01-06-2009, 10:29 PM So the dealer told me to bring it in once it hit 20 hours. That's fine. Does anyone know what they actually do!? If I hadn't had their prepaid maintenance, the bill was $358!!! I do see I have a new air filter... which brings me to another question. My original filter was oily and yellow. This one is dry and red. Why the change?! And what does that metal basket do!?

smo0oth1 01-06-2009, 10:39 PM You should read your Owners Manual Daniel Son! They adjust your valves, change oil and filters etc

hmm... not sure how much gold is in texas... is the foam filter by itself, equal to an aftermarket foam filter?
how is it compared to a velocity or k&n?
posterboy12 01-07-2009, 12:23 AM Almost looks like a UNI Filter ??

That's what I was thinking.... and i'm bout to buy a K&N on Thurs? I'm losing site of the benefit here if thats what it is.
Chrisj 01-07-2009, 12:32 AM Almost looks like a UNI Filter ??
I'm pretty sure it is.
5W0P3 01-07-2009, 12:45 AM So why'd they go from a yellow oily filter to the dry UNI filter? Wouldn't I be able to take the basket out of the inside and isn't that an aftermarket filter right there?
Admin 01-07-2009, 12:54 AM Just like anything, a UNI foam filter should be a better quality filter compared to a stock filter, atleast that's the idea. The K&N isn't a foam filter and may flow a little better, but also doesn't filter as well.
The oil is to make stuff stick to it, it's just like another line of defense. Don't know why they didn't oil it, but you should.
scuzz 01-07-2009, 08:21 AM I'm pretty sure it is.
No, I'll take a picture of my unopened UNI filter when I get home.
BIG difference.
5W0P3 01-07-2009, 10:50 AM I'm totally confused. I'm bout to drop $120 bucks on a filter thats going to perform how much better than this one if i took the metal basket out?!
scuzz 01-07-2009, 10:57 AM Wait. You confused me.
Is the $120 for the 20/hr service filter or for the velocity?
5W0P3 01-07-2009, 12:59 PM Wait. You confused me.

$120 is for the airfilter/pre filter (outerwear) and coupling adapter thing.
20/hr service was $358
I'm just now trying to justify spending $120 on another filter, when the one they put on the quad yesterday might be just as good if you took that basket out.
smo0oth1 01-07-2009, 01:02 PM You cannot just simply take the basket out, The filter will collaspe. Almost all aftermarket filter will out perform the stock one by great margins

Damn. Ohwell, the shop just called me and its in :D
scuzz 01-07-2009, 01:30 PM You could drill the stock basket though.
i now has two!
Three really, 2 stock filters and one Uni.

Huh?! You mean just put big holes but let the basket keep its integrity?
scuzz 01-07-2009, 01:40 PM Yeah, that's the gist of it.
5W0P3 01-07-2009, 01:42 PM Yeah, that's the gist of it.
Is the issue the basket or the filter itself vs. an aftermarket one?
scuzz 01-07-2009, 01:46 PM The UNI (and other filters) don't utilize the stock filter basket. I can't speak for the cotton-oiled filters but the uni has a basket, but the holes are diamond-shaped and are big enough to stick your pinky through.
You'll notice the 700xx has a basket inside of a basket, which I'm sure does a great job with saving the engine but you would think the flow would be GREATLy restricted VS. aftermarket ones.
scuzz 01-07-2009, 04:01 PM Also the UNI filter is oiled too.
5W0P3 01-07-2009, 04:08 PM Also the UNI filter is oiled too.
So why is this one not oiled?!
scuzz 01-07-2009, 04:28 PM I don't know, Honda filters are supposed to be oiled though.
[snotty kid voice]
It says so in my manual.

How much is the shop rate down there? For a 20 hour service they should adjust the valves, clean and oil the air filter, lube and adjust the chain, change the oil and filter, check your tire pressure, and sometimes depending on a model they will change the plug.
They should have cleaned your filter and then re-oiled it. Not sure why they changed it. The Filter in mine is green so idk.
