A quick preview of the first ever L8ton Racing bumper.

The stealth bumper was designed to directly replace the TRX700XX OEM plastic bumper with one that you can actually use!

Made from 3/8" thick hard anodized aircraft grade aluminum this bumper is virtually indestructible. (stay tuned for some good demonstration videos)

Capable of strapping from, you can also pick up your quad from this bumper!

Load your quad in the truck without the fear of having this bumper hit before your tires!

Here are a few preview pictures, look for it to go on sale soon!

This one shown with the optional Club700xx Logo.

Kyle8ton,
Good looking and super beefy. Definitely well designed. Is that solid metal or is it stamped?

Nice looking bumper!!!!!!!!!! Is it rubber mounted??

Kyle8ton
01-08-2011, 10:04 PM
It is one solid chunk of aluminum that is CNC cut then formed. It is up in the air on the rubber mounting... I have tried both, at this point in the testing the rubber mounting does not make much of a difference. They look simple (and they are) but there is actually a lot that goes into them.

PS on the winch mount bumper. My buddy said that he saw a limited edition bumper for a sports quad that had a winch mount. It was made by Pro Armor. Something to look into if you wanted some logistic ideas for the project. I want to say it was for a TRX400 but not positive

Does that solid piece bolt directly to the frame? My only concern is that if it is bolted straight on that if you were to hit something hard that the impact would be absorbed by the frame and not the bumper. Have you put any thought into that? Other than that I think it looks really good and can't wait to see the winch mount bumper you design

Crash,

I have done some quick analysis of this issue. The only way that this would help is if the rubber mounting was large enough to absorb the impact. They would have to be so big and mounted in such a way that the bumper would have no rigidity to the quad and could not be used for much else other than running it into things. This goes back to the same basic argument with the sway bars everyone wants IRS and they want there quad to turn its only in a perfect world with rainbows and butterflies (or a lot of money) that this dream comes true. The best you can do is get a close happy medium. If I made this bumper shock absorbent then it would be at risk of dis-formation and it would be criticized for not being able to take a hit. On the other hand if you make it tough enough to take a hit and the quad suffered the injuries then it would get criticized for being "too tough" and now its responsible for ruining someones frame. In my humble opinion try not to hit large immoveable objects at speed. All this being said for you I can make you a special rubber mounting that you can test out. :hey::confused:

I know what you mean. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I was just curious if you thought about it. With that being said, the testing offer is nice but I'd prefer to avoid taking hits to the front end lol.

I took a moment to think this through. I honestly don't think any type of rubber bushing or bumper crumple zone will you save your frame. If your striking a tree fast enough to bend a frame your bumper most likely will not save your frame. I think hitting something at that velocity you'll have other things to worry about like bailing or racking up a huge medical bill. My pro armor bumper broke on both bottom welds and the uppers are about to fail. I doubt that if I'm going fast enough to tweak my frame that the pro armor turd will save anything.

Are you going to be making a natural aluminum one, or will they all be black? The rubber mounting is not meant to save anything in a crash guys, just normal frame flex while riding. As sturdy as this bumper looks, I would say you want some rubber or your mounts on the XX frame will break.

All good points. Part of me reasoning of posting these pictures was to "stir up" some interest and points of concern. I will be offering a clear anodized finish and will be doing some powder coating on the second run of these. That being said I will probably offer clear powder coat, black powder coat and the clear and hard black anodized finishes. I will try to put together some pros/cons of the three types of finishes. Based on the feedback here I will probably be offering some rubber washers for mounting as optional hardware for those who want it.

What about a red one!??!:xx:
I second the rubber washers, the 700 flex so much that it breaks bumpers. This bumper looks solid so I think it would end up breaking the mounting tabs from the frame. Just my little input.

Rkangel
01-09-2011, 02:19 PM
So what is the deal with frame flexing? Did Honda intentionally design the 700xx to flex this much?
It seems to me that if manufacturers, such as Kyle, are having to alter their designs to account for this much flex, then there are some other issues that need to be addressed elsewhere. Such as stiffening the frame.
I'm not an engineer, nor am I criticizing anyone's opinion. It just seems that rubber gaskets are a bandaid fix covering an underlying problem of frame rigidity.

The rubber washers are only meant for the bumper. It's only purpose is so the bumper wouldn't brake while the frame flexed. If you hit something hard enough, the bumper and or frame will eventually break/bend...

Kyle8ton

This is a surprise to get this much input for this topic. Here is what I have done (prior to any of this discussion) I have made two different mounting variants of this particular bumper. One utilizes "floating" spacers that are not welded to the bumper and are allowed to float somewhat between the bumper and the frame. These in combination with the rubber should avoid any frame tweaking. The other mounting option is hard welded spacers to the bumper. These are really tough and should not break or cause the frame to break. I will leave it up to you the customers as to what type you feel more comfortable with. I can offer you my own personal guarantee that this is probably the toughest bumper you will find for the XX and if taken care of will be the last one you buy.

Baxter

Unsure of the intention of the Honda engineers on the flex. We probably should understand that before our comments really have any meaning. The rubbers just allow us to run a rigid bumper without damage, remember that the original design basis for the frame was for a plastic bumper. The flex doesn't cause any issues except when you try to mount a rigid bumper. I understand what you are saying, but when you can fix the problem with $.25 rubber washers it is hard to justify frame stiffening.

Personally, I think Honda probably realized that they had a flex issue and then put a plastic bumper on so that they wouldn't have any issues.

Eeeerrrrmmmmm!
First post on the L8ton section.
This is all my opinion , so you can take it how you please.
I think Honda made the frame flex this way and to most this will not cause a frame issue unless you have #1a on the front plate.
The 700xx carries alot of weight so you either build a lighter frame that flexes or you can build a frame strong enough to cope with the extra weight, which would make the frame heavier.
Honda comprimised on alot of things with the 700xx including engine, chassis and handling. Think of it as a 4 wheel XR650R built for Baja.
Gotta hit everything flat out and do nothing stupid. Even tree dodging in the UK , I am grateful for the frame flex. It will take anything you chuck at it (with correct build) and still never go offline. IMO. :D
Sorry Kyle for the hijack but this needed answering and prefer not to comment on the bumper but it looks sweet ! Nice Job buddy.

Baxter, not sure I understand where you think our opinions differ. I agree with what you said and what I said. Nothing wrong with a flexing frame until you inadvertantly make part of it rigid by bolting a bumper to it. Send me a PM if you want to discuss any more. I will not take any more room in this thread trying to save people from broken bumper mounts on the frame, in fact I already ran off and am going back to delete my prior posts.

Its really not the frame flexing as much as it is how honda made the mounts. The single mount on the bottom is the weak link!! I know a guy (part of 1a) that made new mounts like the 450R and it works alot better.

Kyle8ton
01-10-2011, 09:22 AM
Well the clear answer here to me is I provide rubber mounting washers and recommend blue locktite for the threads of the bolts. As long as the mounting can float a little then there should be no problem. Thanks for all of your input.

I want everyone to keep in mind that Baxter is also the person who said the L8ton Racing Sway Bar does "jack shit." For those of you who have the sway bar know this is entirely false. 92K1500 did a nice write up and has pictures proving the performance of that sway bar. A truly awesome product at a unbelievable price that does "jack shit." I believe that Baxter has not earned the credibility to say anything on this bumper just like with the sway bar that he never tried or tested yet said it does "jack shit." I'll be recieving the Stealth bumper this week and I can't wait. Keep in mind that everything Baxter is implying is based off of what he "thinks." I'll install this bumper, ride hard, make a video and show over time that there is no such problems with frame flex, frame bending or mounts braking. I think my videos have proven that I can put the XX with this bumper through a strong enough test to prove its functionality and design. I can't wait to have it all together, be patient and i'll get all this together as soon as I possibly can. Thanks Kyle for putting so much thought into your bumper and yet again creating a superior product.:xx::thanks::thanks::thanks::thanks::thank s::thanks::thanks:

Hey Kyle--When you're using this to pick up the front of your quad, is it pretty hard on your hands? Dumb question, I'm sure, but I couldn't tell if maybe there was a piece on the bottom folded backward to make a larger surface area or something...

Anyway, the thing is gorgeous. When I first saw it, my mouth dropped open--so many designs out there and nothing as simple or rugged as this appears to be. Plus, my PRM DOES stick out in front of the tires, so there's that concern when it's in my pickup bed. I just have to get my bumper mounting tabs straightened out, and I'll be willing to pull my PRM off and order this baby. WELL DONE!!!

It's vendors like you and Ed Teixeira that make me happy I'm a single man and don't have to justify all these parts to anyone.

Thanks Guys!!

I agree with you! Teixeira is great to work with. I have minimal experience with the company but what I have done so far has been great!

As for the bumper. Picking it up is really surprisingly comfortable, I was going to add more of a grip feature under the two "ears" but once I picked the bike up with the prototype I did not think it necessary. You can pick it up from the single hand hold in the middle (if your a really tough guy...) or use the two flanges from underneath. I will have to have e Demo video made.

Thanks again for all the support!

I think Kyle is still crunching some numbers. Its not easy making a product in low volume and being successful. Whatever the price is it will be fair. Look at his sway bar, it was hundreds less than the competition and performed amazingly. I can tell you this, when people buy this bumper its the last one they'll ever need. This thing is crazy durable and the design is failure free. My pro armor was a $130 mistake. Never got a chance to hit anything and it busted. This bumper looks great and has tons of functionality. I'm waiting on my powder coated wheels, rubber washers and hand guards. Might be a week or two before I have my machine back together. Work with me and i'll get plenty of pics together in the video.

Well put it that way.... I might consider some sort of group buy to help bring them to market... I will announce it on Friday when they are up for sale. I don't know how much of a discount I can do but I will figure something out.

Stealth Bumper is now for sale!! I cant do a group buy at the moment. It might happen in the spring when I have more bumpers and other products to help offset the costs... :) In the mean time...

So has no one really ordered one of these or are you just not posting here? Either way here’s a update on MY Stealth Bumper. I placed order well before they were ready to ship. Once shipped the USPS kicked my package from Kyle to the west coast, before sending it east. Once it arrived it was worth the wait. As I opened it I was drooling. It was more appealing in person than the pictures that xx700xx had posted. Mostly because this one was mine and going to be on my quad not his, lol.

Bumper came undamaged well packed from L8ton Racing. And with complete hardware and installation sheet. And of coarse a few sweet decals. As for my installation I was more than ready to have the Stealth bumper installed. I went right out after work, to install. Removed old bumper no problem. Ran bolts in and out of holes to clean out the loctite. I had factory off once before to install skid plate. I then started to install and ran into alignment trouble. I check new bumper and holes were spot on with factory. So I figured it was just me. And as I’ve found in the past sometimes it’s best to walk away and try it later.

I went out this mourning, it was nice and sunny. So there was plenty of visibility, and I also took the time to jack the 700 up in the air. So I could get a better look at it with out laying down. 5 mins later it was picture time. So my advice on install is, good lighting and jack it up and it will go right on, following Kyle’s directions of coarse.

Someone posted about picking unit up with bumper. I know Kyle answered this already. At first I thought the side angles were short. As you can see by photo # 3 only 3 fingers fit on flat bottom part. Now look at photo #4, as you grip it, it forms to your hand. Your index finger goes on angle part and thumb wraps on side flat. Feels sweet and is easy to maneuver quad as you grip both sides. As far as picking up with one hand in middle like in photo #2, well forget it! My hand fits fine, but I can hardly move my 700 with 2 hands!

So far I love it. Makes picking up the front of the ATV so much easier, and it looks way better. Just gotta go do some beatin' and bangin' on it and use the holes to strap it down on a trailer etc... etc... to do my review.

Bla, that doesn't look good to me at all. I like the looks of the XX, wouldn't change it to make it look like a more common quad.<cough>

I'm still wainting on the video of 92k1500 picking his 700 up with one hand! He must have arms like the Hulk! All I know is I wouldn't be challenging him to a arm wrestling contest no time soon!

Well I have to pick it up one handed now. My left wrist is trashed. :(

Here are pics of it being used.

It makes strapping them down so much easier with the limited strap points on that trailer without having the strap rubbing the metal.

Kyle designed this bumper as an OEM replacement. Its solid, looks awesome, makes lifting and strapping down easy. He has a bumper that will provide the protection that a lot of people are looking for soon. I believe the design is still in the works but it'll be awesome for protection. Give Kyle some time and I'm sure He'll have that bumper available as soon as he can. I love my stealth because I dont plan on hitting stuff like that, haha. I went riding a couple of weekends ago and my quad was getting so many looks. It was like a bad car wreck, people couldn't stop staring. haha

Thanks for all the comments guys! I have been working on a few more revisions of this bumper and a few others... ;) There are a lot of different requirements people are looking for. I do not think one size will fit all... I still have a "day job" that keeps me from moving at lights speed. Any and all comments are welcome!

Hey now, I'm not THAT young and dumb. A few years ago and I would have tried it but now I will only go so far as to push it up and onto the back bumper.
