: Busted CV Boot
scuzz 03-01-2009, 08:27 AM I went riding yesterday and found this when pressure washing:

Sorry for the crappy camera phone pic. I hope the dealer can get this replaced pretty quick...
So far it's hpfreak and myself in the warranty squad. :(
posterboy12 03-01-2009, 10:20 AM That sucks
I will be surprised if they cover it under warranty. We use to tear those things up all of the time trail riding with our Sportsmans. We would tear at least one every trip, so we always had a spare one with us so we could fix it back at camp. They usually rip from twigs or brush that gets up in there and puts a small cut in them that you cannot see and then after awile of riding they bust open. Once you see this I would stop riding ASAP because if you get sand or rocks up in there you will end up spending allot more money.
scuzz 03-01-2009, 01:39 PM We'll find out tomorrow. I'll call before heading out if it's covered. I paid for the 5 year warranty...so it should be.
scuzz 03-01-2009, 02:27 PM Just checked my extended warranty...covered and no deductible!
bduncan1231 03-01-2009, 07:56 PM Get a CV boot repair kit from the dealer. It cost me araound 35.00 with my discount. The kit will do 1 inner and 1 outer boot. The outer takes all of 20 minutes and you dont have to pull the axle. The inner will take a little longer. Cheap insurance to carry with you so you dont ruin a weekend of riding.
hondarider203 03-01-2009, 09:47 PM well if it makes you feel eny beter i lost the heat sheild some where in the wilderness
scuzz 03-05-2009, 12:14 PM As I mentioned before Honda is covering this 100%. (which they should) So that's $39 (retail) for the boot and 1.3 hours of shop time.
I pick it up tomorrow.
tomkat 04-04-2009, 11:38 PM So far it's hpfreak and myself in the warranty squad. :([/QUOTE]
I am now in the busted cv boot warranty club. First ride after the big 3 :( left outside boot split wide.
See post in the competition thread for more on the first ride.
Colorado 700XX 04-05-2009, 09:23 AM Has anyone tried greasing the outside of the boot. I used to drive (still do, but newer one) a lifted toyota pickup with the torsion bars turned way up causing the CV's to turn at a pretty steep angles. I used to grease the boots because sometimes the friction of the rubber on rubber would tear the boots. I could try it on the 700XX to see if it helps. I hadn't really thought about the CV boots before this thread was posted.
smo0oth1 04-05-2009, 11:39 AM TomKat & Scuzz, Could you tell if these boot failures were due to something hitting them or not?
scuzz 04-05-2009, 09:26 PM Also greasing the outside of the boot would only attract more sand, dirt and even rocks into the grooves.
Save yourselves some time by ordering the part as soon as you get there. This way you don't have to wait for Honda to approve the part and even longer for it to ship. I got refunded the money after it was all over.
Also I'm positive nothing got caught up in there, I was on some 100' wide ass hauling trails.
tomkat 04-06-2009, 11:08 AM My boot just split open in a crease. It doesn't look like anything punctured it, looks like someone took a razor blade and cut it.

Probably a jealous Raptor guy...LOL
bkabner 04-06-2009, 07:04 PM I haven't even looked at my cv boots after past couple of rides....After reading this post i'm getting nervous! I better check mine as soon as I get in from work this week! lol
pigdog 04-07-2009, 12:22 AM I clean my bike after every ride, once its dry I spray it with silicon, I spray heaps on the cv boots,,I done over 100hrs on my bike, the boots are good,,
double_0_xx 04-07-2009, 09:00 AM if it is hitting something, this is a great call for skids... ricochet goes all the way up the backside.
scuzz 04-07-2009, 10:16 AM I always cleaned mine too, oiled the chain, the whole nine yards.
OzLinc 04-07-2009, 07:34 PM http://www.cvsavers.com/
These things work..........seen 'em in action
smo0oth1 04-08-2009, 06:35 AM lol looks like someone put some pvc pipe over the axles
froggy 04-08-2009, 08:02 AM nah its soft material although looks like it would hold stuff in there and tumble around
double_0_xx 04-08-2009, 08:39 AM why not just get a skid? Confused..
scuzz 04-08-2009, 08:53 AM The result of mine being torn wasn't by a foreign object. Also as far as a skid goes you can still get tears from sticks and barbed wire when you go through the mud or brush.
bkabner 04-09-2009, 08:47 PM Those CV protectors might be a great thing for keeping foreign objects out of the boots...However, I would never put those on my XX! lol I know the goal is protection over looks, but those things look horrid!
OzLinc 04-11-2009, 03:34 AM they come in black too........
Chrisj 04-11-2009, 12:39 PM Yamaha has Kevlar boot covers.

tomkat 04-15-2009, 02:19 AM :steamed:so honda is tellin me they are not covering this failure... wierd they did for scuzz. anyway, so i MUST have my xx for this saturday and rather than fight with them for warranty, im gonna change the outer boot myself.
anybody know if theres any special tricks or things to watch out for as i do this. Im fairly mechanical and it shouldnt be a problem, just like to get surprises outta the way if i can. thanks all!
scuzz 04-18-2009, 12:27 AM Drive shaft center nut = 108 n-m or 11.0 kgf-m or 80 lb-ft

I went and picked up an oil filter and some other things for my quads today at the dealership where I got the work done and got a reprint of the warrant work.
I'll scan it in this evening.
tomkat 05-20-2009, 01:17 PM I'll scan it in this evening.
And could u email me those maps? I still can't get em to work from the zipped link in the map thread.
Thanks G
scuzz 05-20-2009, 09:26 PM You should have an email with the scanned invoice.
Maps to come soon.
700xx crazy 06-14-2009, 04:28 PM :steamed:Well busted another stupid cv boot today.:steamed::disgust:   Well guess the old guy at the axle shop will make another $25.00 bones. I'm gonna make some a-arm skids that go way up to solve this BAD PROBLEM. Nothin worse than a broken quad!
scuzz 06-14-2009, 07:42 PM So that's *two* for you?
700xx crazy 06-14-2009, 08:54 PM Yep thats rite Scuzz. D@m things, not made my mind up yet if im gonna buy some skids an add on to them or check on the aluminum prices and make my own. But either way gotta do something this has gotta stop! It hasn't been that long since the last one! Its knarley up here in Tenn LOL.
bduncan1231 06-16-2009, 08:36 PM You otta try to do it yourself. I bring a repair kit with me when we ride. It's about a 20-30 min repair, and if its an outer boot you dont even have to take the axle out. 700xxcrazy, looks like we might have to get a ride going. We usually start our riding season around october
700xx crazy 06-16-2009, 10:38 PM Sounds great! Just let me know in time enuff for me to get ready!:yay:
scuzz 06-16-2009, 10:56 PM Jeff's band broke around his cv joint last time we all went out riding we ended up using and extra air filter clamp that I had to fix it.
Josh700xx 03-22-2010, 07:24 PM I had only had mine for 2 weeks when i was washing it and noticed that my right outer cv boot was busted, i gott bring it in for its first service but i doubt that its going to be covered. I'm sure they'll blame it on me for something stupid.

Just try atleast, most dealerships would. I was up in your neck of the woods this past week, did a motorcycle ride up the coast past portland and stuff.

yea im just gonna bring it in for service and not mention it and see what happens. I'm north of portland by like 2 hours but thats cool man, the weathers been getting nice and i'm itching to ride
mike700xx 05-31-2010, 12:48 PM I dont know how I did it but I blew the left cv boot at the wheel!! Are there any threads on this? I searched and nothing?? Anybody else put a new one on?
Superswire 05-31-2010, 01:20 PM Hey, I have done alot of cvs/axles/diffs/etc and can tell you first, take the cv apart, clean it and check for the bearings to be scratched or anything.
Also do not get a "split boot" (a boot that bolts on without taking the axle apart) I guess they are ok for keeping in your toolbox for on trail repairs, but only should be used temporary IMHO.
I would get what they call a "Boot set" It should come with a new boot, new clamps and CV grease. Here's a page for reference, note part numbers 6 and 12 are outboard (wheel end) boot sets and there's a pretty good schematic...
http://cheapcycleparts.com/model_years/1601-honda-2008-trx700xx-TRX700XX/assemblies/20200
It should be pretty east to take off, and fix, here's where I get MY repair parts from, they are cheap, reliable and make performance parts with warrantees, have had much better luch than stock with these guys, thicker boots, stronger axles, etc, my only gripe withe them is thier clamps, I feel the stockers clamp much easier and much harder, again IMHO. They also have videos to help you, honestly, your cv will prob knock off with a hammer and tap back on like nothing, they are cool like that, once you do it once, you will prob be like me and order a spare an know all you really need is tools to remove the hub, a good mallet and a screwdriver to repair your whole axle...

Superswire 06-10-2010, 05:49 PM How many hours were on your ATV when this busted ??? I am problably going to order one inboard and outboard just in case...Mine looked a little dry after being submerged a few times in NC clay, so i started using zymol leather conditioner on them after cleaning, i also spray my ENTIRE atv with westley's black magic tire shine, i heard pam cooking spray, wd40 and others work as well, but the tire wet is readilly available and made for automotive uses...I know it protects the rubber/plastic parts and sure helps keep the mud from stickin and shines everything up quite nicely too !!!
Oh, one more good thing to rub em with would be fork oil, it has nice rubber protectants and other goodies to keep em slippery and flexable...maybe trans fluid too, but i dont trust that crap, too many chemicals
