: Proper break in procedures

So I left the dealer today with a new double o xx.. (delivery tomorrow). They said 3-4 tanks of gas, no full throttle (internal thought: fight the urge, must fight the urge)..

That said,
What is the best recommended break in procedure, low throttle, then mid, 2-3 minutes each etc? Anything I should do other than not pin the throttle?

Only go 3/4? Make sure I hit all the rev bands?

I am worried I will pin it with normal riding. Kind of hard not to. Maybe some type of throttle stop is in order? Hey, we have a product. Break in period throttle stop.. Or some type of Valet mode (like cars) ECU map.

I know tomorrow they will give me a full breakdown once delivered, but I wanted the owners opinions:confused:

My dealer said it wasn't necessary and to change the oil after the 1st ride.

Change after my first 10 min ride or 1st tank of gas?

I will be riding all day in 2 weeks. Until then, I will be annoying my neighbors as I cruise down the street.

I have rode my 400ex hard since the first time I took it out. I did the same with my 700 and no problems yet.

You'll find there you're not strong enough to be WOT the whole time; you'll have no choice but to mix it up. :D

well she is here... I rode about 10 min just checking it out.. 1st and 2nd gear are useless on the road...

I think the speed is deceiving.. plus I wasnt crushing it trying to break everything in..

But 1st gear does a wheelie no matter how light I am on it!!!! also I noticed the IRS immediately. Was extremely nice to go over the speed bumps and not get tossed.

Unfortunately I cannot ride for about 2-3 weeks. I may try to get home early one day and go local to check her out.

I think the power will be absolutely awesome.. thats for sure. Everything is well put together.. and to top it off, the exhaust is nice and quiet compared to my FMF on the 300ex.

Edit: As I was writing the review I got the urge... went out and tried second gear.. Oh lord, so smoooooth so... so.. so..redicilious I cant even explain how great this bike is. I know after 3 min of riding.

And the fact I pulled into the garage and used reverse to park her.

I cant say enough, how much I like this bike, and how happy I am with my purchase...

Just ride it and don't worry about. I have over 5k on mine and all I've done is change oil and clean filter. No valves nothing. Runs like a charm.

The owners manual says 20hrs or 100mi, whatever comes first. So I changed mine around 100mi. This thing runs like a dream, I wanna keep it that way.
Best. Quad. Ever! $6000 for it, and never even an ounce of buyer's remorse!

Only thing you really HAVE to do is change the oil and filter after the first 4 gas tanks, this to get rid of the shavings that the new engine is sure to produce. Other than that just try not to keep it pinned for long periods and you should be fine. If an engine is well put together you dont have to really take it slow...

Every single car, motorcycle, dirt bike, ATV, and jet ski I have ever had that was new I have beat the crap out of it from day one. I had over $15,000 in my last 306ci fuel injected engine in my Mustang and after 10 WOT dyno pulls it went straight into the car and beat on for 5 years on the street and drag strip. IMO driving it the way you normally would is the best way to go from day one. What ever you do, do not baby it all the time. Let it warm up properly before riding whether it's summer or winter and change the oil/filter often and you should be good to go for years.

:stupid: I once was mustang owner too, but grew out of it but now growing back into it, I BEAT THE $&*# OUT OF MINE ALLTHE TIME! I had 5 at one time. My Dad told me to drive it like u were gonna drive it all the time from the start and maintain it and it could take all u could throw at it. He was rite!:hey:

Yup that is correct. I got 470hp on motor out of that little 306 and just in case it wasn't enough a 250 shot on top of that. And I beat it up all the time. The only time I ever had any trouble from it was when I missed a 3rd gear shift on the spray. Bumped the 8,500 rpm limit and took out the left head gasket, 5 intake and 6 exhaust valves, broke 13 out of 16 springs and shredded the guides. I shaved the heads ten thousandths, put it all back together and continued running some nice 6.9's on motor and 6.20's on spray:)

My dealer was an Aussie who seemed pretty knowledgeable. He told me to just go WOT through all the gears, and then engine break back down through every gear. He told me that would make sure all the rings and parts in the engine would expand correctly...or something like that...can't remember exactly.
Did that for the first tank of gas and then was good to go. Changed the oil after the first day and haven't had a problem yet.

Also, I asked my buddy about this who's very involved in the TRX450R.org forum. He said pretty much everyone has their own way to break-in...so there's not really any "specific" way to break it in.
