My dad and I are going out to the Hatfield-McCoy Trails in 13 days I was wondering who has been there and if so how was it? any tips or pointers or words of advice?

Also it does not say so on the rules but is a flag required for riding out there?

No flag needed. I've been to the Rockhouse and Bearwollow trailheads and both are very awesome. One thing I would definatly reccomend are goggles because it can get dusty but in March probably not that much. The trails are labled very well with green, blue, black, and red/black for dificulties. You have to try the red/black if your up to a challange. And watch your gas tank because you could be very far from the town and if your low you won't make it back.

Spare tires would be at the top of my list. I shredded a tire about 5 miles away from where we were staying. Long/slow ride back.

Before heading out, make sure the trails are open, don't know how much the mountains received this year but from what some of my buddies were saying the tops were still covered. Pinnacle is a good trail to ride on.

I'm going to Rockhouse and Bearwallow in mid-April. How was the trip? Was there snow? Trails muddy? Cold?

Same weekend. Hopefully it's somewhat warm. Looking forward to seeing how crazy the Blk/Red trails are this year.

I remember at Gilbert (Rockhouse) the Blk/Red Trail # 95 going up. It's short, steep, very rutty, and rocky. We did it two years ago... that definitely was one of the toughest hills at the whole trailhead system. We did it though...took us about an hour. Last year, we went down that same hill and came to the conclusion it wasn't doable coming up because of a huge rock in the middle... I mean this rock took up the WHOLE trail. It was as big as a small car.

Looking forward to it again.

Yea we went up trail 95 but went to 96 and missed the tough part of 95. Can't wait to try it this year. Anyone know what the red/black trails are like at Pinnacle trailhead?

Yeah, I did them.. at least I think so. Went to Pinnacle Creek/Indian Ridge last year and did all the hard trails. Don't remember any problems on them.. but they change from year to year. Good luck.
