I can't finger this crap out...how do you get them darn springs off the shocks? Thanks,

you'll need a 36mm spanner and a vice. The front stock shock is taken apart by unscrewing the top mount. Pull the springs down and you will see a washer with 2 flats on it . Put the top mount in the vice, lift up the springs and put spanner or adjustiables on the washer and unscrew. Simples.

Does the ds540 springs come off the same way?

No, they are easier. Unscrew the adjustment nuts all the way, remove retainer ring, slide spring off.
