I am 30, 6'0" and about 190- 195, and am looking for something to ride around the farm in woods, next to, and in pretty flat fields, through a creek on the property, and over little drainage jumps through the fields.

I was going to buy a new 08 700xx for a little less than $6k out the door, but thought about looking used first. Here are the options I found, tell me what you think, and what would fit me best - I kinda like the idea of the 700xx, but wanting to make sure.

2008 Kawasaki KFX450R - original tires wore down about 1/2 way, plastic scratches, etc. from being ridden, no mods, $3,700

2008 Yamaha Raptor 700SE with pipe, nerf bars, front bumper, and plug in chip. I haven't seen it in person yet, but seems like it was taken care of from pics. Original tires wore down about 1/2 on those also. $4,500

2008 Honda TRX700XX all stock with only 2 hours on it - the guy is wanting to sell for $4,900obo - seems like it is practically new

What do you think? the kfx is cheap, but the 700xx is basically new. I would need to do skids on the 450 and raptor (700xx not as big of a deal?), and add nerfs to the 450 and 700xx.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

I too had a similiar situation about a year ago... personally I would go with the 700xx!! The 450's are great for racing around, but you might as well grab hold of MORE POWER!! The raptor is a great atv,but I believe the XX makes a better trail/woods bike-primarily because of the IRS . Don't forget about the Honda reliability factor as well-best in the business!!!

The KFX is quite a bit cheaper, but I am guessing that it was bought in 07, but still lower hours. Does the price for the 700xx seem like a good deal? I have read about crazy cheap OTD prices for new ones, but $4,900 obo seems like a good deal, I think. I would guess that he would take a little less. The Raptor does at least have the better shocks and a few aftermarket parts.... I don't know!!!

I live in central IL. I won't be doing any track or sand stuff. I will mostly be riding in the woods, still mostly flat with a creek that runs through it. Ride around the fields when the crops are out and jump the hills that are there for drainage (not huge, but makes a nice little jump). I might take it to an area that is more hilly and challenging terrain also - still mostly flat land in central IL though :) I'm not crazy about needing to go the fastest, but like quick and fun. Am I painting a decent picture of what I would like to do? Thanks for the posts already - I hope to do something this weekend, so I am glad you guys are here.

Do some searching , You get a better price on a new 2008 TRX700xx. Which would be your best bet. Honda have lowered there prices and dealers are trying to get rid of old stock. Bad for them ,Good for you. Try Ebay , there are alot of good offers for new 700xx.

If you like technical trails, rutted trails and being able to go through mud better than any SRA quad out there...this is the quad for you.

If you like drag racing and sand...you might like the raptor.

Both are very fast and comfortable to ride. (in my opinion)

Anyone have any thoughts on the KFX450R? Is it a cheap enough deal to go with it over the 700xx which is about $1,000 more?
My friend has a kfx450 which I have ridden several times and it is a great quad. Riding over rough terrain..... the 700XX is way more comfortable and more likely handle it. My friend has got hung up a few times and I was able to fly right through it on the 700XX. If the terrain you'll be riding on isn't too bad, then you might want to save the $1000 and buy the kfx. I don't think you can go wrong with either quad in my opinion.

There are several differences between the two quads, but you'll learn to love whichever one you buy. Another positive for the 700XX is the forum (club700XX) is pretty kick ass!!:yay:

450 < 700... why not get the extra power for a couple hundred bucks more?! you wont regret it - ever.

For me its 700xx or nothing. and I have a Raptor. I've rode a ltz400, trx450, yfx450... left and leave them all in the dust. Either drag racing or trails or anything. * < 700xx. That's all I have to say.

jsdugan,
I can appreciate your quandary. It is sure difficult to decide when it comes to "bigger is better" or more docile is ok. I would really decide what exactly you are going to do with the machine besides the riding you describe. My main concern is your experience with this machine or others. The 700XX is a fire breathing monster but can be tamed. If your experience is 0 this machine could be a little much. All macho elements aside, you should really search your needs for a machine like this and decide #1 what your experience is, #2 is 700cc something you’re really need, what additional tasks would you like to perform with this rig (could be a utility 4x4 would be more suitable for your requirements such as work around the acreage) (just to let you know utility machines are no slouch for power and are great for trail riding) and #4 are you willing to part with the additional money for this machine you described?
Very Respectfully,
Sid

Thanks Sid, you made very good points. I have had motorcycles (one way a more-than-I-needed Ducati ST3) and ATV's once in a while. I have ridden my uncle's 700 raptor a few times. Right now, my mother in law has a brute force 650 that I get to ride once in a while. So, there is a utility machine on the farm right now that I could go through the bad stuff with. I ended up getting a used 700xx for a good deal. It is fire breathing monster, and I am slowly working on getting a feel for it. This beast should not be taken lightly. There is no way that someone with NO experience on an ATV, or even on a motorcycle (clutch stuff), should have this for their fist ATV (my opinion). I am really enjoying it though, and looking forward to feeling a bit more comfortable on it. Have Fun!

The KFX450R is their "race" bike and judging from what you say you'd be riding... I'd say that the 700xx is your best bet. Any bike that has that "R" designation, is better suited to tracks... not to say that they are not able to be ridden on trails. Most major manufacturers make race bikes in the 450cc class... but if you want to do trails, I'd go with something that does not have the "R"... I mean, if you're not going to be racing on the track, what's the point getting a quad of any make optimized for tracks?

for your riding style i would defently go with the xx i ride mine literally every day around my property and enjoy every min of it. also it has the potential to be a race machine with the right mods and money of course. also the xx has very smooth power and lots of it. 450 class's are snappy power race bikes like said before.
you dont need a sprint car to drive around town but its ok to have a suped up chevy if ya know what i mean.lol

Never rode a KFX 450, but I can't imagine in any of your riding scenarios where the XX wouldn't be better. I just wish I only paid that much for my XX!
