Something wrong with my electrical system. bike wouldnt start, jumped it with my truck starts but dies after i disconnect the cables. bought new battery starts fine, rode it for about 2hours and then bike choked for a while then died. thought it might be the stator, installed new stator, bike starts but when i diconnected the positive lead on the battery and the bike dies. fuses checked and were fine, thought then the voltage regulator was bad, installed new one, started bike fine then disconnected the positive lead and bike still dies. please any suggestions. does the bike need to have the battery leads hooked up to remain running? i thought it should run with just the stator and voltage regulator after being started without the battery? any help or suggestion would be really appreciated, thanks a lot

Why would you want to disconnect the battery after you have started it?

wanted to check to see if i fixed the problem, i initially thought it was a bad battery and thus bought a new battery which it allowed me to run the bike for about 2 hours then died on me almost left me stranded. i thought if the stator or regulartor wasnt working then the bike was using only the battery as its source of power.

put a volt meter on the battery while its running (it will need to be with the jump cables disconnected) it needs to be about 13.2-13.5 volts this means your charging system is working. If not then you need to figure out why usually a rectifier or a stator/generator.

If the voltage regulator/rectifier was bad and you replaced the battery before changing the regulator/rectifier, you just ruined the new battery. It may have over charged it and ruined the cells in it and it will no longer hold the correct volts.
