I am not going to be doing any racing with my 700xx but I do want to wear some gear that is protective. We mostly ride trials, gravel pits and woods. So nothing real high speed. I ALWAYS wear my helmet and googles, but what else do you casual riders recommend? I usually just wear jeans, a carhartt and some steel toed logger boots.

(laugh away)

I wear Wal-Mart Jeans, some old 3/4 footballs shoes with cleats and any long shirt.

I just never bought riding pants. Come to think of it, only one of my friends has "riding clothes" that aren't jeans and shit.

if you don't have nerf bars, boots are really a good idea. i would have broken my foot or ankle about a week ago whe my foot slipped off the peg. i was wearing full length mx boots, so i just got a bent peg instead. leather stronger than steel...go figure!

helmet, goggles, boots, tshirt, jeans and a bionic style protective shirt thing. its a mesh material with elbow, forearm, shoulder chest and back pads built in but it breathes good for the summer.

1. Most important... HELMET at all times!
2. Good boots
3. Goggles
4. Gloves
5. Chest protector!

MX pants and jersey is just an option if you want to look pretty.

I am very guilty of not wearing protective gear. Not that I shouldn't, just didn't have it growing up and haven't forced myself to wear any... YET. I am anal about wearing everything but leather pants when riding on the road but off road I just haven't gotten into it YET. That being said, I am just getting into the sport quad aspect of off roading.
Anyways... I also will be shopping for head to toe gear. If anyone knows what to stay away from that would be more helpful that anything to me. Most is personal choice or price limited but to know what boot is a piece of shit would be very helpful.

In the past I started out with just a helmet, goggles, gloves and hiking boots. Then i had a wreck. The helmet saved my head, but my leg was messed up for a couple months. So, I decided it was time to get some riding boots.

On the second ride after getting the boots I had another wreck. The helmet saved my head, and the boots saved my legs, but I spent the next 8 weeks mending broken ribs.

Now I ride with a helmet, goggles, gloves, riding boots, sturdy riding pants, and chest protector, minimum. None of my gear is super expensive, mostly a mix of Shift and MSR, but it has performed pretty well so far. Wrecks are bound to happen, and I figure it is better to be safe than sorry.
