That would be best. My buddy fine sands his before he paints them. They look good for a ride or 2 but start to chip soon after. A little touching up and they look good again. Just from what I have seen done

Before you paint aluminium you have to etch and alodine before you apply the paint, without it epoxy really is a waste. You really need an epoxy that is catalyzed or it really isnt gonna hold up anyway. Powder coating is cheap and is the way to go. You can get both rear wheels done for around $50 each. if you do paint em only sand with a scotch bright.

Aaron just did his, I'm not sure how they held up after the ride on Sunday at turkey foot but maybe you can ask him what he used.

I think if someone was desperate enough, they would try a self etching primer, an.. if it didn't hold up (which we all know it doesn't) maybe throw some of the spray on undercoat on em. I bet that would stay on pretty good an not just chip off, wouldn't be a gloss black, but... would do the trick. I on the other hand have a buddy who said he could powdercoat all 4 of mine for 100-150 bucks.

I used Rust-Oleum Automotive enamel from Wal-Mart, and cleaned and degreased them before painting. They mostly held up, but there are a few chunks missing from the right rear, and all around the bead is chipped off. Honestly powder coating would be the way to go.
