IIIBuckIII,
I had to go with a half boot (generally used for hiking) from Big 5 (Sporting Goods Store here in California). My problem is I have a big foot and could not get a regular boot under the shifter (Note: I have nerfs on the machine). Tried moving the shift lever up but that was too un-natural and had to pick my foot way up for down-shifting. I know that doesn't address your issue but that was my way of dealing with my problems.
Best of luck.

I had a similar issue and also use hiking boots from Big 5... But, they didn't fit under the shifter (PRM Side Bars... no netting... solid pan bottom) I moved my shifter up one spline and got used to the new feel for down-shifting.

roadkill,
I suppose I should have waited longer to adapt to the new shifter position but was not patient enough.
Hope IIIBuckIII can find what works for him.

Had to move mine up a notch too, using the factory Honda nerf's. On topic why not a full boot? If stuck on shorty's I'd look at this style with 3 buckles. There more of a mid boot if you ask me, but would be good support for the ankle.

the only thing that sucks about shorty boots is there not tall enough to protect your right leg from that header heat

Well if it feels like you cant hardly walk in them, that's good support. The 1st time I wore riding boots I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to shift gears. A full boot keeps more water out. They are a pain to put on, but after there on there okay. I just wouldn't want to break down and have to walk very far in them, that's for sure...
