Gps for Trails

I have been doing some research online and I was going to get a garmin GPSmap 62s but I have seen online that some people have been using their phones and using an app called backcountry navigator. What are your thoughts about the phone and what are you using. My phone is the S3.

Thank you

If you pay for insurance on you cell phone you may be okay using it on a sport quad. I personally wouldn't use my cell phone for a GPS. You can get decent entry level Garmin's for below $200.00 and d/load the topo maps for free. IDk how the maps work with backcountry, but I think that is a pay app? And I have a 32 gig card in my Garmin that's 2/3s full idk how much memory you would have to spare on cell phone. I have a lot of topo maps thou from different states, and a lot of trails marked, with several way points as well. A larger screen would be nice but imo if using cell phone it would be emergency only and pull out of back pack. I sure wouldn't mount it on bars and ride with it, but it may be ok. I've herd of people using tablets!

I used to run a Garmin, but decided to try out my iPhone instead. I've had a Lifeproof case on it along with the Lifeproof bar mount and installed it on my handlebars. That, along with the Motion-X app, has worked great. I've preran Baja courses with it and trust me, it withstands the elements! Well worth the investment for the case and mount, and the ability to still multi-use your phone in case of an emergency. By the way, after 2 years, my phone is still brand new under the case.

Ceballos,
Is that app a apple app only? I searched for it on the droid and came up blank. And then found it on my wife's iPod, $1.99 looks cool. Also wondering what kind of battery life you get out of your iPhone using it as you do? My Garmin will run all weekend at least with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Sometimes I use it two trips in a row w/out re-charging.

I started out using a pda and then a mobile phone.. the resolution is much higher with a mob so nicer to view..
they are solid state devices so no issues with vibration.
Laptops in a vehicle are not recommended though as it destroys them (unless its a toughbook)
We have viewranger and memorymap in europe which both offer usa maps, but not sure what sort of content.
the apps are free, its the detailed maps you pay for..
I use "ultimateaddons" as the waterproof and cushioned box for the phone which also comes with a hard wired power supply so no flat battery..

I believe Motion-X is just for Apple. There's another app that works just as well for Androids, but I can't remember the name of it. The phone is hard-wired to the quad so no battery issues.
