300ex questions

Its been a while since I have worked on carbs. Well I got a great deal on a 300ex so I picked it up. It ran good when I got it, but it was already warmed up. Couple days go past and I want to give it a good going through. Started it to warm up a little, it wouldnt idle, adjusted idle up till it idled smooth(wasn't idling high). Then when it warmed up it was racing at an idle. Adjusted it down then it was sporatic. Changed oil, pulled air filter(kn), then I notice the inlet tube to carb was wet. Ok, smelled it, it was gas, pulled it all apart and took carb apart. Accel pump wrked fine not gummed up. Pulled jets to see size, it was running a 38 and a 130. It has slip on and airfilter with no lid( I have lid to put on). Looked it up nd that's close to what's recommended. Checked a/f and it was all the way in. Screwed it 2 1/4 out and put all back together. Motor was slightly warm and it started and idled great. Ran better to( outruns my friends stock one with 100+lbs extra). Well went out today and started it. It wouldn't idle till it was warmed up a little. Is this typical or what should I try next. Oh, and spark plug was hand tight before and I tightened. Sorry for novel. Motor background, no blue smoke, slight blck smoke every once in a while(rich). Are these things so cold natured it takes them about 3minutes to run properly, I don't remember my warrior being like that.

hmm that is wierd did you try cleaning the tank it could be getting trash in the pilot jet

also I have a 300ex im building right now and I plan on putting a 400ex carb on it the stock carb restricts the 300 alot when you go deeper into the motor

suposibly it is a direct swap you have to streatch the intake boot to fit over the larger carb port and jet it obviously

good luck

I don't plan on getting far enough into the motor until my son and gf get proficient at riding a manual atv. I was really wanting a raptor 250 for them but I think reverse and an atv I don't ming them maybe wrecking on are the best bets for the "beginner bike". My son had an 80 a while back. I just need to figure if the settings are good now and the bike is just cold natured, or is my a/f adjustment is off.

Yeah, I had one and it does that. Let it warm up for a while. 400ex's are the same way. Put the choke on and let it run for a minute or two and gradually take it off.
