It can be used to reference who you're replying to, but I really don't think it makes a difference to see the stats of how often you're mentioned or anything (even tagged and quoted, I wouldn't care about).

I want the old site back
this one wants me to log in over and over and over, then i have to do a security box thing and put in another code.

Can you try and F5 refresh and make sure you click the "remember me" box when you log in?
