700xx de-tuned for California??

I have read elsewhere that the 700xx has been de-tuned for California taking away from the low end and mid range. Does anyone know if this is actually true??

Also, if true, would something like the PCiii correct the de-tuning?

The rumor is that Honda did this to meet California emission standards.

This is why usually bikes and quads will come a little lean from the factory, to pass emissions tests.

It is possible that there is a california version. I had an 04' VTX 1800 that was california emission,(evap. can and extra emisson crap), you could tell by a designation in the vin number but, I don't remember exactly what it was,(CA I think). They typically dynoed a little less than the 48 state versions. Good thing is all that stuff is removable without harm, just have to plug the vaccum ports where it comes off.

Cali is the strictest of all the States with regards to emissions. There is no Cali specific version, they (Honda) just make it legal for use in California and every other state is therefor covered. This does mean that the 700XX is quite restricted.

This is not a rumor it's fact and Honda will tell you this if you can get them on the phone. Just look up the Cali EPA site and you will see the 700XX info there.

eg: Top power on a 700XX is made with a A/F of about 13~13.5:1 but EPA demands a A/F of 14.7:1 this is quite lean. A Power Commander could fix this. There are other factors in there but this is the main one.

Thanks all. Thats the info I needed. I found where I read that about the 700xx. It was from a media/factory intro at Dumont Dunes in California. A small part of one media review is below...

".....
We also believe that Honda has used the programmability of the fuel injection system to de-tune TRX700 because it is a little sluggish on the bottom end and it also had a tendency to stall fairly easily at low RPMs, but sluggishness disappears at mid throttle when the 686cc engine comes alive. Honda didn’t have any comments on our findings, but we are confident that re-mapping the EFI to richen the fuel mixture will eliminate our test units low end hesitation, which was probably done to meet emission standards....."
