Auto decompressor spring???

I am pretty sure my auto decompressor isn't working. The starter would struggle to turn over the motor. I bought a new battery and it still did it. It would always start but the starter is definitely working hard. So while I have it apart I have been trying to figure out how to fix it. I have read all of the threads on it but there isn't much on how it works. It felt to me like there was no spring in it. I read of the spring flying off when taken apart. I pressed it apart and took the ring off and the spring was still sitting there. It is a VERY light spring. It is about the diameter of a ball point pen spring but shorter and lighter. I could put a heavier spring in but I am afraid it would make it so that it would stay on too long. Any ideas on how to get this thing working right?

I tried to find a different spring that would work and gave up. I decided to try reassembling and see how it went. I put the spring and the ring back on the cam and it felt completly different. You could really feel the spring and the ring popped back into place on it's own like it is suppose to. I went ahead and pressed it back together and it feels fine now. I don't know what the problem was before but I think it will work fine now.

I'd be curious if you can update with the results once you get it back together and if it seems to be lasting (after many starts). I think mine might have a similar issue, but it's intermittent at this point.
