another damn 13 tooth sprocket question?

Ok simply put....at what point in the upgrade performance is the 13 tooth just not practical anymore? In other words a 13thooth may be great for stock to mildly modified XX's. but after the big 3 ( or more) is it still a good choice or will it hold you back more than doing good?

Depends on how/where you ride. I'm mostly in the woods right now, no trails so lots of tree and rock crawling. 13t is perfect for me even with the big 3. If I was out on the dunes or open areas, I'd want the 14t back. I'll be bringing the 14t down to Hatfield in case I get sick of shifting so much.

I have the big 3 and have had no use for the 13t for where I ride. The only reason I could see getting it is if you do a lot of crawling. I hope that this is the last thread regarding this topic as it has been discussed over and over around here!

I agree with this except for dunes and sand - the 13 is best for that as well because of how much material the paddles actually move. The caveat would me a loose powdery sand might warrant a 14 tooth, but the majority of places that I have rode with paddles have needed a 13 tooth. Oh! One more thing. Crappy paddles that don't grip would be fine with a 14 tooth, but for paddles that "hook" you will want a 13 tooth.

In 5WOPE's video where he hits 74 at the bottom of 5th I believe is with a 13T sprocket. According to this number you still have way plenty top end, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. I haven't installed my 13T yet so I haven't been able to find out for myself. I'm guessing the only problem people have with the 13T is the first couple gears are very low and you are doing a lot of shifting as well 1st gear becoming almost insignificant unless you are doing a lot of crawling.

I love the 13T for the tight trails we have around here. Knocks about 6 mph off top end, but will still run 76 on the GPS (that is on the asphalt slight down hill with the wind at your back). That is plenty fast for me. I agree with Thorsky, just depends where and how you ride.

13t was the best thing I did, I am not about flat fast runs...give me trails, whoops and rocky hill climbs and I am a happy camper
