Quad stalled and then would not restart

Ok so on Sunday I went out riding and rode for 1/2 hour and then took a PowerAde break and started riding again. I made it about 50 yards into the woods and it stalled and wouldn't crank over. Pushed it back to the truck and loaded up and headed home. No loud noise. It's was just like the engine died.

Tonight I pulled it apart. I was execting to find a broken vavle or something preventing the piston from making a full revolution. I pulled the head off and found nothing wrong. Still the piston would not make a full revolution. Something is preventing it in the bottom end from turning. I can turn it a little ways clock wise and then it locks and then I can turn it back counter clockwise and it locks again.

What could have broken that prevents the crankshaft from making a full revolution?

Not looking forward to pulling the motor and splitting the cases.

If piston and connecting rod, wrist pin are okay, sounds like crank bearing.

The connecting rod is making contact with the balancer shaft. The balancer shaft is preventing the crank from making a full revolution. Is it possible for the balancer shaft to get out of time with the crankshaft or could the bearings be that bad?

I need to pull the flywheel and then I can split the cases and get a better view of what's going on.

Either the gear or the weight rotated on the shaft. Not sure how this could happen.

Edit - If I compare the weight and the gear to the part on the end of the shaft that drives the water pump, it is the gear that has moved.

I have an explanation for this now. 2 years ago I was going about 30 mph and the motor quit on me and rattled like hell. I replaced the piston and cylinder at that time. Now I think my issue stemmed from that incident. The gear is only pressed onto the shaft. So when the motor suddenly stops the gear stops with the crankshaft gear and the counter weight keeps going. I think that event broke it loose and it has been moving every so slightly for the last 2 years until finally it made contact with the connecting rod.
