New Cam Install

Just ordered hot cams stage 2 cam. Anyone got any install tips I should know before I tear into this thing. The manual says I need a special tool for the cam chain tensioner. Does anyone know if you can get around that?? Also I couldn't find a torque spec for the valve cover bolts .... anybody know what spec is??

the special tool can be replaced with a small flat head screwdriver...valve cover bolt tq is not listed in the manual, i would do them to 19ft lbs, i got that number from the 400ex service manual.

Same here, I use a small screwdriver. Works perfectly.

Those valve cover bolts are in the manual, you have go look them up as the bolt size. I want to say they are 6.5 ft lbs of torque only

Do you have to keep tension on the screwdriver to keep the tensioner back?? The bolts on the valve cover are 8mm and 6mm

As for the tensioner yes. A pair of needle nose vice grips take care of that. Make sure with the bolt sizes you look up the actual bolt size and not the head size. I snapped one when I did it wrong the first time. Then go into the manual and look up torque values

To remove the tensioner you can simply unbolt it without the use of the screwdriver. To reinstall it you insert the screwdriver and wind it up, u hold the tension until you tighten the tensioner down. It doesn't take much effort to wind the tensioner up but you Cannot screw the tensioner down without winding it up.
