My Brother needs Help!

ok so my brother bought a 300ex, what a mistake he should have a bought an xx haha but anyway it makes a weird tick i dont think its the timing chain because its not constant it goes away for 10 seeconds the comes back for 5 its weird and we are both stumped any idea what it could be let me know????

can you tell from where in the motor? how is the idle? if it is to low the compression release will kick in. does it go away when you give it gas? or when you let off? when was the last oil change? metal in filter?

towards the left side of the motor when on the bike and it happends when you you let off and it returns to idle it will give a couple of high pitch tings i have not done an oil change recently because my drain bolt it chewed up i have to order a new one and filter it also back fires alot may not be jetted for hmf slip on if that helps
