Sunk it !

Puddle got rather deep, i got stuck and on tickover the engine died..
I knew instantly it was water logged..
done the usual stuff and got the water out and started up the quad.. Had to ride 40 miles to get home but all was ok..
Did 4 oil changes..went out for a ride and noticed a very tappy engine. Did valve clearances and were way out?
Another ride and its tappy again.. thinking cam/rocker arms..
They have lost their case hardening and were wearing through.
New cam and rockers instaled.. All running without tapping !

But - now i have a knock ! under light throttle its noticable, under hard acceleration or high speed its not.
Thinking big or small ends?
Will order big/small end bearings and crank shaft/counter balance shaft bearings.. well thats the theory..
Looking in honda parts manual a small/big end is not listed? Is it all part of the crank ??
Last question. what else may i need , like gasket kit etc ??

Rappy, sorry to hear about that. I am guessing it is the bearings. Some water worked it's way in there on your 40 mile trek home. If I recall, when I got both of my cranks, the bearings came with it. But hard to say, I've done a lot of cranks on a lot of my toys. IMO, if you are going to go that far into the motor, I'd tear it apart first and check out the crank/wristpin, pistion and rings before you order anything. Then get what you need, but I'd go ahead and order every bearing on there. Just because it isn't bad, doesn't mean it wont go sooner than later. Just no point of needing to tear it apart again down the road for one bearing you didn't replace. Just my two cents though. I've swamped several machines, and never had this kind of problem, but I also didn't ride it right afterwards, I always had someone to tow me, or my truck was right there, so can't say if the 40 miles could've done much damage to it. I'd get a whole gasket kit as well, considering you are tearing it all apart, and I'd definately go OEM on that. I've tried several brands of gaskets over the years, and always had bad luck with NON OEM ones. I hope you can get parts easily enough on that side of the pond. Good luck.

Man I hate to hear that, I did that on one of my quads years ago and it was a slow death for it. I did all the oil changes ( 5 or 6 ) filters, air filters and so on. what killed mine was the oil pump died starving the top end .... I wish you luck ;)

I did get a lot of water in the oil... that would be the cause of the cam/rocker arms..
I wondered about oil pump... I knew i should have looked through valve clearance cover with engine running before i put plastics back on ....

Been through it loads of times... Problem is some butt wipe farmer had dammed up the end, causing it to be deeper than it would naturally be... and i was the first quad in a group of 19 so i saved 18 others from the same fate :(
Looked at the hotrods kit... will have to strip mine and see exactly whats wrong then figure out how much i dont want to spend ..
Its a rip off in the uk so all parts will have to be bought in usa as loads cheaper, then get ripped off with customs and import duty.

according to easystreet there is a bearing in case on shifter side that should not be removed it should stay and if it goes out you have to buy one half of the case as it comes with the bearing in it which doesnt make no sense to me

Sorry to hear this but if you're not in a rush for parts then go to www.partzilla.com . They are the cheapest for oem parts but the postage seems to take there time. Also have alot of spare parts for the xx , so if you need something urgent then chances are , I'll have it.

Thanks for the offer baxter.. I,ve found many online oem parts places in the states and they all seem to be similar on price..
I paid $74 for a cam whereas partszilla want $105 with discount, but their rocker arms are cheaper than what i paid so overall would say a mass order would work out similar from whoever..
Been looking at the hotcams stroker crank and cylinder, giving 753cc ... Hmmm ?
Do you have a front wheel, or a pair as ive got the biggest dent ever in mine?
400 in uk, 100 in states...
