What do they do? I dont under the concept.

They make your quad more stable. Think of it this way:

If I was standing next to you and your feet were together and I pushed on your shoulder you would more likely have to catch yourself so you wouldn't fall.

But...

If I was standing next to you and you had your feet apart you would be a lot more stable and less likely to fall over.

Longer a-arms are like this.
